This Co-CREATE seminar discusses how different modes of research – including computer modelling, Earth system observations, and field experiments – may interact, build on one another, and what can be learned (or not) from each. While Co-CREATE focuses on conditions for responsible SRM field experiments, the session places these in a broader context alongside other research modes to inform balanced investment in modelling, observational infrastructures, and potential experimental capabilities. The seminar will explore each research mode’s contributions, limitations, and suitable questions—e.g., theoretical bounds (modelling), ground truth and validation (observations of natural analogues), process understanding (field experiments). The seminar supports informed discussion on prioritizing research investments within Co-CREATE’s framework for responsible SRM governance.
