Co-CREATE Seminar: Towards a European Blueprint for Responsible Solar Radiation Modification Research

Friday, 14th February | 10:00-11:15 CET | Online (Zoom)

SRM encompasses a contentious set of technologies aiming to limit global warming by reflecting sunlight back into space or increasing how much heat escapes from the Earth’s atmosphere. As global temperatures cross the 1.5 C line, these technologies are rapidly gaining attention – yet they also come with risks and uncertainties.

Across Europe, discussions on SRM research governance are gaining traction – as evidenced by the three reports published last month to provide the EU with scientific and governance advice on SRM. This shows that SRM research is becoming a prominent question for European governance. Exploring conditions for responsible SRM research governance thus appears to be more important than ever.

In this context, the EU-funded Co-CREATE Project is exploring conditions for responsible SRM research, assessing whether or not—and under what conditions—SRM might be warranted from scientific and social viewpoints to reduce climate suffering. In this public seminar, the Co-CREATE Project will provide a sneak preview of its work on this rapidly evolving question, and will facilitate a discussion with EU representatives on how to build a European blueprint for responsible SRM research governance.

Topics of discussion will include:

  • The legal and regulatory mapping of SRM research governance.
  • Research ethics processes that might be adapted for SRM.
  • The range of scientific experiments that might need an SRM governance framework.
  • The dimensions of potential guidelines and principles for SRM research governance.
